About the Program
SGNA’s Transition to Gastroenterology Nursing Practice program was created to support the content, foundational training, and practice of those transitioning into gastroenterology nursing. All of the modules in this program are online and self-paced, allowing you to complete them on your own time.
This program was developed by GI nurses with experience in areas including as educators, nurse managers, Infection Prevention Champions, SGNA committee members and chairs, and board members for organizations in the gastroenterology field. SGNA is here to help you and your staff transition to GI.

Karen Wilson, MN RN CGRN
Karen Wilson has been a GI nurse for over 20 years. She is a certified GI RN, Infection Prevention Champion, Member of Infection Prevention Champion Task Force, Member SGNA Education Committee, and has 20 years of experience as a University of Phoenix BSN program faculty member.
Karen Zervopoulos, RN CGRN CFER CSPDT CAIP
Karen entered the field as an endoscopy technician, later becoming a GI nurse and working in GI for over 18 years. Currently, Karen is an endoscopy nurse and her facility's infection preventionist. Karen is also a Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse, Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor, and a Certified Ambulatory Infection Preventionist. As an SGNA member, she has served on many committees and work groups, including her current role on the Education Committee and as a Chair for the Infection Prevention Champions Program. Karen has also served the Certification Board of Sterile Processing as a board member representing the Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor credential. In 2017, Karen received the SGNA Regional Society Member of the Year Award.
Mary Grealish, RN MSN CCGRN CSRN
Mary has been a practicing GI nurse for 19 years. She received her MSN with a focus on nursing education in 2010. Mary has served on her regional board (NESGNA) as program director and President. Mary has presented regionally and nationally and currently teaches the CGRN review course. Mary’s experience also includes Clinical Faculty for Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) for Moderate Sedation Simulation Lab for MD credentialing, Clinical Faculty for Regis College School of Nursing at NWH for first semester students and for second degree students at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and a Gastroenterology Clinical Educator at NWH. In addition to staff education, she is also responsible for the development and evaluation of all patient educational material at NWH. Mary has served on multiple quality and safety committees, the Joint Education Committee and the Gastroenterology Quality Investigative/Quality Assurance Committee (with risk management).
Maureen Cain, MSN RN CGRN
Maureen has been an educator in Endoscopy for over 10 years and was a GI Endoscopy Manager for over 18 years. She is responsible for overseeing orientation for Endoscopy technicians and nurses for inpatient and ambulatory. Maureen has participated in the Preceptor Development program for three years with other Educators at her facility. She collaborated with Endoscopy Management Team Leads in improving their orientation plan for new staff.
