The most common disease diagnosed by gastroenterologists, IBS, affects 10-20% of the US population. This complex disorder can have a negative impact on a patient's daily activates including social relationships and productivity. This session reviews the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of IBS. The most current symptom-based diagnostic criteria, as well as the latest treatment options are explored. A personal perspective from a 30 year history of IBS will also be discussed.
