Learner Directed Activities for Convenient Contact Hours

SGNA is proud to offer a wide variety of learner directed activities for your educational benefit. These educational offerings provide a convenient opportunity for you to earn contact hours and will aid in your continual professional advancement.

Why is the GI Procedure DVD Library for you and your unit?
The GI Procedure DVD Library is SGNA's newest educational tool, specifically geared to educate GI/endoscopy units about advanced procedures. Use the DVD Library to teach yourself or others!

Each DVD offers:

  • Live footage of the procedure
  • Interviews with the physician, nurse, technician and patient
  • Discussion questions and an exam
  • GI specific contact hour opportunities for your unit*

*Contact Hours
To receive contact hours, you must submit your evaluation along with payment of $20 per contact hour for SGNA members or $30 per contact hour for non-members to SGNA Headquarters. That means, if you complete a DVD that offers 1.5 contact hours, the member price is $30 ($20 x 1.5 contact hours) and the non-member price is $45 ($30 x 1.5 contact hours).

Endoscope Cleaning and High-Level Disinfection Self-Study Module

An accurate and comprehensive study module that interprets widely endorsed scientific theory into easy-to-understand, step-by-step guidelines. This user-friendly module interprets SGNA guideline documents for standardizing safe, efficient and cost-effective infection control practice in endoscopy settings.

  • Identify the internal and external components of the flexible gastrointestinal endoscope
  • Describe the procedure and rationale for each step of the reprocessing
  • Perform the cleaning and disinfection of the endoscope following SGNA's recommended guidelines

  • Emergency Preparedness: 1.00 contact hours

Upon successfully completing each module, a contact hour certificate will be available for download. A passing score of 80% or better is needed to receive the certificate.

The SGNA Advanced Associates Program modules are available for purchase separately for Nurses and will be awarded the following contact hours:

  • Communication: 1.5 contact hours

Upon successfully completing each module, a contact hour certificate will be available for download. A passing score of 80% or better is needed to receive the certificate.

Learner Directed Crossword Puzzles
Price: $60 Member/$90 Non-member

A learner-directed activity that offers a fun way for registered nurses to earn 3 contact hours! Each puzzle consists of 20 clues. The content topics include:

  • GI terminology
  • Intravenous therapy
  • Manometry
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Pharmacology
  • Pulmonary procedures and medications

Upon completion of all six puzzles, you will need to send the puzzles to SGNA Headquarters along with the provided cover sheet to receive your certificate of completion. You will need to achieve a passing score of 80% or better for each puzzle in order to receive your contact hour certificate.

IBD Module Series
Module #1- FREE
Module #2 - $20 Member/$30 Non-Member

SGNA is excited to offer you 2 modules in our Inflammatory Bowel Disease online series. Each module is worth one contact hour upon successfully completing the online quiz. A passing score of 80% or better is needed to receive the certificate.

Module #1: The goal of the first module is to introduce and to update gastroenterology nurses on Inflammatory Bowel Disease as it relates to current practice. After you study the following information you will be able to:

  • Explain the pathology and risk factors of IBD.
  • Describe the differential diagnosis of the IBD Diseases – Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
  • Discuss the preliminary diagnostic tools available outside of the GI Lab.

This module provides 1 contact hour upon completion of the online 12 question exam. Upon accessing this module, you will receive access to the IBD Module #1 booklet (PDF document online) and the online exam. To access the module, visit www.sgna.org/ibd.

Module #2: The goal of the second module is to build on the education introduced in the previous online module, Module I: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Birn, 2007), as it relates to current practice. This Module will focus on the treatments of IBD most commonly prescribed today. After you study the following information you will be able to:

  • Describe the goal of treatment in IBD patients.
  • Describe the five basic categories of medications used in the treatment of IBD
  • Discuss the use of TNF (tumor necrotizing factor) therapy and list the side effects.
  • Describe surgical interventions for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

This module provides 1 contact hour upon completion of the online 10 question exam. Upon purchasing this module, you will receive access to the IBD Module #2 booklet and the online exam.

Make Learner Directed activities available year-round to your entire unit! Learning Link offers a library of accessible, customizable continuing education for your GI/Endoscopy unit. Learning Link provides high quality instruction, including sessions from the Annual Course, that can be used for group or individual learning opportunities.

Customizable “sets” of 3, 5 or 10 sessions are available in a wide range of GI/Endoscopy topics. Each session contains must-have resources and tools to suit your unit's needs and offers contact hours for successful completion.
