New Advances in Hemostasis

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common diagnosis in surgical and endoscopic suites. This generic term refers to conditions resulting from a variety of diseases and disorders. In fact, there is a significant difference between variceal and non-variceal bleeding. In this one-hour continuing education activity, the speaker will explore the etiology of GI bleeding diseases/disorders, examining the effect of factors such as alcohol, gender, smoking, medications, etc. Participants will discuss various hemostatic procedures, such as sclerotherapy, banding, thermal treatment, bipolar therapy and combination therapy, reviewing advantages and disadvantages. The speaker will discuss a new modality for treatment of variceal ligation and non-variceal bleeding: the endoscopic clip. A boxed meal will be provided.

Treatment of Malignancy Colorectal Obstruction

Colon and Rectum Cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women combined. Approximately 8-29% of patients with colon cancer will have an obstruction some time during the course of their treatment. It is imperative that these patients are giving proper palliative care during this critical time in their lives. In this one-hour continuing education activity, the speaker will review disease states associated with malignant colorectal obstruction and provide information on various treatment options, focusing on colonic stent placement. Advanced Endoscopic Therapy, Next Generation Electrosurgical Treatment for Resection, Ablation & Control of Mucosal Lesions

The purpose of this continuing education seminar is to meet the learning needs of the gastroenterology nurse who is responsible for patients presenting with mucosal lesions or polyps. Advanced electrosurgical cutting and coagulation currents are discussed for different types of mucosal lesions. Nursing assessment needs related to patients presenting with suspicious flat and large lesions are discussed. The various types of traditional lesion resection versus advanced resection technologies for safe removal and ablation are thoroughly presented and discussed. This includes tissue injection, lesion ensnarement & resection, Argon Beam Coagulation and other resection techniques. The expanding role of argon therapy and treatment risk of polyps will also be discussed. Appropriate consideration of choices depending on location and lesion type, safety considerations and risks will be discussed. 1 Contact Hour will be issued for each participant.
