STERIS Corporation
“Microbial Reality: The Challenge of Biofilm Control”
Speaker(s): Dr. Gerald McDonnell, STERIS Corporation.

Location: Room 006AB, River Level, Convention Center

Microorganisms are often viewed in infection prevention as individual villains on a surface patiently waiting to be exterminated by the champion antiseptic, disinfectant or sterilization technique. In reality, microorganisms pose a greater challenge as they are often associated within ‘biofilms’, which are defined as communities of microorganisms (either singular or multiple species) developed on or associated with surfaces. These surfaces can include solid/inanimate surfaces, foods, soft tissues and any liquid/air or liquid/liquid interfaces. This presentation will review biofilm formation and biofilm-associated nosocomial outbreaks or pseudo-outbreaks. These can be considered as being linked directly to biofilm-contaminated endoscopes (and other medical devices) as well as biofilm-associated cross-contamination in washer-disinfectors. Existing and developing methods for reducing the risks of biofilm developed and control will be reviewed with an emphasis on endoscope decontamination.

RSVP – Contact John Kurowski at John_Kurowski@steris.com.

Verimetrix
“Innovative approaches for optimizing endoscope leak detection accuracy”
Speaker(s): Pat Holland and Terry Bader

Location: Room 202, Concourse Level, Convention Center

Flexible endoscopes are highly prone to holes, tears, lost seals and other damage that allows fluid to enter the scope’s sensitive interior where it inflicts costly damage and creates cross-patient infection hazards. Leak detection accuracy is hampered by the difficulty of identifying leaks with current testing equipment, low reprocessing staff skill, rushing of the test when busy/short-staffed and poor test practices. This program addresses proven techniques for enhancing leak detection accuracy and leak prevention. Additionally, an innovative new automated technique will be presented that has dramatically lowered repair costs and infection risk in beta tests at several prestigious hospitals.

RSVP - Confirm attendance via e-mail to terry.bader@Verimetrix.net

“Is your patient breathing? Implementing Capnography in your GI Lab"
Speaker(s): Sarah Eisenbacher

Location: River Room 001, River Level, Convention Center

Patient safety is our number one goal and ventilation monitoring is an important component in its achievement. In fact, CO2 ventilation monitoring improves patient safety in sedation. It is just that simple.

  • Capnography provides the physician/nurse GI team the earliest indication of hypoventilation or respiratory distress.
  • Changing association standards now recommend CO2 monitoring, for procedural sedation and references document that capnography detects respiratory changes minutes before SpO2.

This seminar will provide information, clinical and financial relevance, to implement Capnography monitoring in your hospital. The material was obtained from three facilities currently utilizing CO2 monitoring in procedural sedation.
